More about this organization

Founded in 1902, our programs have evolved over our 123-year history as animal welfare has progressed. Since the opening of our current campus in 2001, HSBV has supported more than 250,000 shelter animals in Boulder, Broomfield and Weld Counties. Currently, HSBV impacts more than 20,000 animals each year through adoption services and by supporting the human/animal bond in the communities we serve. Our open-admission, socially conscious shelter cares for any animal including guardian surrenders, strays, transferred animals, and those in need of our suite of safety net services to keep pets and people together seven days a week. Our animal shelter provides shelter, medical care, and behavioral support to pets in need. Our services also provide a safety net of care resources for pets in our community. Over the last 123 years, we have established ourselves as a model for animal sheltering, veterinary care, and behavior expertise - promoting science and reward-based training methods, innovative veterinary care techniques, robust transfer partnerships with organizations experiencing pet overpopulation, and a safety net to help encourage healthy human-animal relationships by removing barriers to pet guardianship as well as critical support during times of hardship. HSBV began as a shelter for lost and unwanted animals, became a destination for pet adoption and animal transfer, and most recently, we have become a support network for pet guardians. While we continue to provide for lost animals, accept transfers, and promote adoption services, the future of pet guardianship relies on access to services, helping encourage families who want a pet in their lives by providing approachable opportunities and our ability to reinforce those relationships and preventing relinquishment, especially during hardship. HSBV works to improve the quality of life for companion animals and people in our community; while also extending the compassionate care resources we have to animals of neighboring communities within Colorado, and beyond. Our animal shelter provides care for more than 4,000 animals annually. Each animal entering our facility receives a medical and a behavioral evaluation. This extensive process considers the individual needs of each animal, and the care necessary for successful adoption. Our Adoption Center helped 4,022 pets find loving homes in 2025. The Animal Services team reunited approximately 686 lost pets with guardians last year, and accepts relinquished pets, assists with guardian-requested euthanasia services for pets, and provides resources to community members in need. In 2025, our transfer program provided adoption opportunities for 982 animals from over-burdened, or under-resourced rescue and shelter facilities. Our full-service Veterinary Hospital supports public clients, and our Shelter Medicine program provides critical medical care for every animal arriving at HSBV. The Training and Behavior team assisted 936 shelter animals in 2025, providing them resources to overcome challenges, and thrive. The behavior team offers public training courses and workshops to promote reward-based training as well as behavior science education to help strengthen happy and healthy relationships. HSBV’s safety net program provides relationship support during times of hardship and crisis, to prevent relinquishment and encourage pet guardianship by removing barriers and increasing access. In 2025, we distributed 39,163 meals and supplies to community members in need and provided $208,281 in discounted veterinary care to 2,373 animals and their guardians. Through partnerships with area shelters, veterinary specialists (such as neurologists or veterinary behaviorists), local health and human service organizations, our local hospital, and corporate partners, we can connect pets and pet guardians with the resources they need to live a happy and healthy life – together.
